N is for north carolina! (and for missing summer)


N was originally meant to be for nutella... but i'm trying to quit. instead, i offer a couple of photos from our weekend in north carolina this summer. we had a wonderful time - ate barbecue, went hiking, watched some old friends get married. we even had a back-waters "we look like city folk, we'll never make it out of here" moment driving through south carolina on our way back to atlanta (so embarrassing - there was a local parked on a motorbike in front of a closed gas station... we asked directions... he spooked us... i'm pretty sure i heard our tires squeal as we burned out of there. so embarrassing, yes, but have you seen deliverance??)

bienvenue bob!


well, after two years of hemming and hawing, knox and i finally bit the bullet and packed bob up to bring him to france. got his shots and kitty valium, had a chip installed in his neck, filled out all the necessary american and french paperwork... knox said no one even glanced his direction as he carried bob through french customs. just goes to show you...

anyway, bob is here... and we no longer sleep through the night. he still likes banging on our doors at 4am and is still smitten by the sound of "twinkle twinkle little star" - these are constants. he has also - unexpectedly - taken to hanging out on the modem and has discovered a real taste for rabbit... i wish we had leash trained him so that i could take him for walks... but that's not going to happen. i've got a new camera these days, and so far, he tolerates it. so, instead of playing outside, we sit for lots of photo shoots. i imagine this won't last.

we don't normally let him on the table during meal time... the rest of the day is free game. it's a cat - what can you do?

M is for maxi, mitterand, and mariage frères


knox and i have been back in paris now for about a month. in that time, i've spent countless hours in front of my computer, tweaking job applications and hoping that the job fairies grant my employment wishes (otherwise i'm moving in with the sans papiers commune living up in the 18th, and you may never hear from me again). i just recently finished and headed back to the library, where now i sit... yes, in front of my computer... trying desperately to get going on chapter 3 of the dissertation (this thing isn't going to write itself, people, and since i've now told everyone in academia that i plan to file by the end of june, i seriously need to get cracking. ugh.)

anyway, i was pretty excited about getting out of the house and my pajamas, and since friday was supposed to a nice day, i decided to wear my favorite summer dress one last time (it was POURING rain by the time i left the library, much to my dismay). and though this M is really for moi, for finally getting back to it, i dedicate it to three essential components of my first day back on the job: my maxi dress, Mitterand's national library, and mariage frères green tea.

L is for ladurée

i have to give credit where credit is due... i would never have known this place were it not for j & j peden. and i must also admit, for a very long time, i was rather dubious: "who pays 16 euros for a bloody club sandwich??" i wondered in horror. BUT, i have seen the error of my ways, and though i am still not inclined to lunch here, i cannot deny the appeal...


ladurée is, without a doubt, a MUST for anyone visiting paris. even if you don't dine here, you should treat your senses to a cup of hot chocolate in the winter or a rose-flavored ice cream in the spring. the tea room, though complicit with an orientalist/colonialist ideology i simply cannot endorse, is fabulous. so pretty. and yes, the servers are snotty as all get-out, but who cares? it is THAT GOOD.


and if you don't have an hour to delight in all the truly superior sweets offered on the menu, there is no reason not to pop by the shop and take away some macarons, a millefeuille, or a jar of raspberry jam. you will not be disappointed. ask kirsten dunst - ladurée catered the decadent pastry scenes of sofia coppola's 'marie antoinette'. i'm sure she sampled a few.

K is for kir royal



kir royal = a classic french apéritif with crème de cassis and champagne

this summer i'm the teaching assistant for a paris summer program, and last night we took the whole class (38 of them - and guess who's going to be grading their final papers!!) out for a couscous dinner. couscous is to france what curry is to england - a wildly popular, almost national dish which is actually that of a former colony (in this case, 3 former colonies/protectorates: algeria, morocco, and tunisia). a couscous dinner is semolina wheat granules topped with vegetable stew, lamb patties, chicken, and merguez sausage and then accented with chick peas, a spicy paste, and plenty of yellow raisins. it's no bun cha, in my humble opinion, but it IS delicious.

but i'm not here to tell you about how we stuffed ourselves nor am i going to detail the raucous dance party that erupted as soon as we'd set our forks down (moroccan music is impossible to resist. seriously, your hips just take over!) no, i'm here to talk about the apéritif. because we were such a large group, the restaurant owner offered everyone a complimentary kir royal. as i mentioned above, kir royal is a shot of crème de cassis finished off with champagne. it's sweet and bubbly, but only just so. and it's awfully pretty! santé!

J is for jeu

there are two tables in the park right around the corner from our house, and a few weeks ago, knox surprised me with our very own set of paddles and bright yellow balls. aww, i couldn't have asked for a sweeter guy! i almost feel bad about smoking him every game...

now i'm no hotshot, but i can hold my own once i've warmed up. knox, on the other hand, did not have a table on his porch as a kid nor did he grow up in a family of ping-pong enthusiasts (by the way... dad, what ever happened to the god of pong??) but he has made incredible progress after only a handful of games and is a lot of fun to play with. there are some other great players in the 'hood, including the 4-ft-tall, lightening-fast french kid we met and each played yesterday. THAT was humbling!

well, knox and i are just back from a week in the south of france with some of our favorite people, some of the only people who could tolerate us trying to navigate the backroads of france for a week... people who use empty wine bottles as late-nite microphones and encourage impromptu dance parties in 100-year-old provençal farm houses... bref, our kind of people.

we're seriously bummed to be back (though i'm really the only one who's back - knox is off to croatia tomorrow morning! lucky dog).

i promise to hurry up through this abcédaire and get to "V is for vacances" so you can see all the gorgeous pictures. in the meantime, i offer a shot from the hike out to the calanques of cassis.

I is for "i like top 10 lists"

this was a tough one: immigration? impressionisme? (knox says, "most of your photos are blurry... it could work!") idiotie? idéologie? nothing has spoken to me, so i've decided to go a different route with "I"...

knox and i still do not know where we will be living come august 1, and we've been a wee stressed of late (as many of you know, we are both hopeless over-planners, and this sort of uncertainty does NOT sit well.) so, in order to distract myself, i've come up with a list of my top 10 favorites for may 2009:

1. exotic literature in french, preferably about Indochinese pirates and con gáis
2. arugula with lemon and parmesan
3. tubs of spreadable goat cheese
4. dreaming about buying a new camera
5. vacation planning!
6. sunday night bike rides around paris
7. tina fey and '30 rock'
8. counting down the days till we get bob back
9. light, chilled red wine
10. stopping to visit with the medium schnauzer who lives at the record shop on rue daguerre

H is for huîtres



huîtres = oysters

technically, we were late for oyster season. the french prefer them in the months ending in "re" - octobre, novembre, décembre - but they're still good as long as it's cold outside. or so i understand. we went in march for a belated birthday outing and were very pleased. the guys at the huîterie régis, aside from being remarkably friendly, really know their stuff. coming from texas, i naturally assumed there would be cocktail sauce (quelle horreur!) but was assured by régis himself that they are best au naturel. he was right - even the lemon was overpowering.

and get a load of the floral arrangement... the whole experience was a study in simple beauty. two texan thumbs up!!

knox and his beard (no, not me)



to help our newly-minted-phd get through the final stretch of dissertation writing, we decided to set up a two-part incentive program:

1. schedule party for the weekend after self-imposed deadline complete with mojitos, macaroons, and plenty of homemade apps
2. forbid him to shave

i'm still not sure what motivated him more... no pics from the party, but i diligently documented the hair growth. by the end, he could hold a pencil in it! impressive (though not as impressive as the dissertation itself)!!
